Ever since I saw Essiebutton’s post on instagram back in October 2013 — link, I know I had to have one too. Talk about #essiebuttoneffect, right? I was so disappointed to know that this range — the Sheer Lip Color range was not available in Indonesian market at that time. I considered ordering online, but I’m not so sure about the shade. I wanted the shade Rosy, just like Essie’s, but I’m afraid it won’t suit me as lipstick can vary widely from person to person depending on their skintone and lip color, etc. So when I went to Singapore & Malaysia on January, I know I had to get one of this!
There wasn’t really much shade choices, 14 to be exact. First I had to try the shade Rosy. Here’s when I’m very happy I’ve been patient enough to not order online and waited until I can try it on the counter. The shade Rosy was not in any way flattering for me. So I tried other shades that caught my eyes — I had no interest in nudes and darker colors at the time. And then I found Carolina. I’ve read online that this shade is Carolina Herera’s favorite lipstick shade that was previously discontinued. This particular shade was brought back to the market after Bobbi Brown herself acknowledged that the color was a favorite of Carolina’s and therefore named it after her. I saw a swatch online and although I think this kind of a more mature color, but I think it’s beautiful. And I think the color looks very nice on me, so I bought it.
I found the formula is very nice. The stick itself is on the hard/firm side, not the mushy buttery easily melted kind of texture, you know? It has a subtle shine of a sheer lipstick, but it is in no way sheer. One swipe gives about 80% opacity. Two swipes and it’s opaque. But I found the subtle shine really help giving a more somewhat natural look than a very creamy lipstick. If I want to use it sheer, I would wear a lip balm and just dab a little of this lipstick above it (I personally like my Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm for under lipstick, review here). This way it can appear glossy — if you’re using glossy lip balm — or stain like if you’re using Nuxe Reve de Miel like I do. When worn on its own, I found after a couple hours it can get a bit dry, so I usually apply lip balm underneath to help keep my lips nice and smooth. This is not a big problem though, as with many other lipsticks I have the same problem. Overall I really like this Bobbi Brown Sheer Lip Color, and I’m really hopeful in getting the limited edition shade Peach Sorbet! (I’ve got it! Review & Swatch coming soon)
